Recovery services, breakdown and accident assitance
There are a number of garages offering 24 hour recovery services should you be unfortunate enough to either breakdown or have an accident. It is handy to have the contact details for some of these recovery services in your car, just in case.
If you are involved in an accident or breakdown that renders the car undriveable and the police stop to assist you then they will be able to put you in touch with local garages providing out of hours services. Depending on where your car has stopped you may not be given any choice in which recovery service tows you away - this is especially common if your car is presenting a danger to other road users or is causing major delays.
Breakdown services
If affordable it is sensible to join one of the national breakdown services such as The AA, The RAC, Green Flag, GEM etc. These provide levels of breakdown cover to suit most budgets and needs and vary in price from service to service. Ring them all if you can before taking out a policy. Also note that you may be offered discounted rates when taking car insurance or by ordering online.
