Used Car Buying Advice

Used car buying advice.

All reputable dealers will agree that you should always take care when buying a used car. That 'bargain of a lifetime' may not be all it's made out to be and could end up costing you far more than you planned. If you can't tell an engine from an exhaust it makes sense to take along someone to advise you.

Alternatively, a number of companies provide an evaluation service which, amongst other things, will provide an engineers report telling you the condition and value of the car, along with any repairs necessary.

If you find the car in the Classifieds and there is a ‘T’ in the ad, that means he’s in the trade. Make sure you go to the premises and make sure he tells you he’s in the trade as well. If he doesn’t, he could be out to trick you.

If you find the car in the classifieds and he offers finance or part exchange he’s not trying to help you, he’s a trader. Again, make sure you go to his premises to see the car.

If the phone number you ring is a mobile, be very careful. Find the landline number and ring him back before you go and see the car. If you don’t, you could buy a ‘pup’ and never ever find where the vendor lives.

Never meet the vendor other than at his address. That way if it all goes wrong you know where to go back to complain.

Always look at the car in the daylight. If he doesn’t want to let you, then it my have problems that show up best in the light.
